A new home or a new marriage usually comes with an empty dining table and a lot of cardboard boxes. A set of placemats is one of the few gifts that makes the table feel finished on the first night.
Why placemats work as a gift
They are useful from day one, they don't take up cupboard space, and they don't need to match anything the couple already owns. Ours come as a set of 6, enough for a first dinner party, and they wipe clean, which matters in a busy new home.
Choosing a design
If you know their table, match the finish to it: bright and antique golds such as Morpankh and Gulnar Bloom for dark wood or stone, champagne and ivory such as Zari Bloom and Sheesh Mahal for pale tables. If you don't know it, the champagne designs are the safest choice; they suit almost everything.
Round or rectangular
If you're unsure of the table's shape, round placemats are the more forgiving gift. They look right on round tables and soften a rectangular one.
